Phenomenon of Global Warming

One of the principal goals of the E-CAP is to help residents and other Oceanside stakeholders make informed decisions regarding their contribution to global warming. To learn more about the phenomenon of global warming, its effects, and how you can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we encourage you to view a series of short video lessons produced by the Pacific Institute: Pacific Institute Climate Insights Mini Lessons.

Levelized Cost of Energy in the United States

What are the costs of clean, sustainable energy relative to the costs of continued reliance on fossil fuels? Geography is one of the most important factors in determining the relative costs of different energy sources. The interactive map exhibit below, published by the University of Texas, illustrates that the costs of different energy sources vary considerably across the country. The map shows that in San Diego County, utility-scale photovoltaic is presently the least expensive source of electrical power, with availability and the cost of externalities factored into the cost calculation. Note that in many other parts of the country, wind power is the most economical source of electricity, and that natural gas has largely supplanted coal as the least expensive fossil fuel used to generate electricity.
